The Zombie Cocktail is a classic tiki drink renowned for its potent blend of light and dark rums, tropical fruit juices, and aromatic bitters. This party favorite combines bold flavors of citrus and spices, delivering a refreshing and complex sip that packs a serious punch—perfect for summer gatherings or Halloween festivities.

  • 1 oz golden rum
  • 1 oz dark rum
  • 0.5 oz overproof (151-proof) rum, for float

Fruit Juices

  • 0.75 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz fresh pineapple juice
  • 0.5 oz fresh orange juice

Sweeteners and Syrups

  • 0.5 oz passion fruit syrup
  • 0.25 oz grenadine
  • 0.25 oz simple syrup

Other Flavorings

  • 0.25 oz falernum liqueur
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 0.25 tsp absinthe or pastis

To Serve

  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig, for garnish
  • Pineapple wedge and/or cherry, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Glass. Fill a tall tiki glass or highball glass with crushed ice and set aside to chill.
  2. Combine the Ingredients. In a cocktail shaker, add light rum, golden rum, dark rum, lime juice, pineapple juice, orange juice, passion fruit syrup, grenadine, simple syrup, falernum, bitters, and absinthe. Fill the shaker with ice.
  3. Shake Well. Shake the mixture vigorously for about 15 seconds to thoroughly chill and blend the flavors.
  4. Strain into Glass. Strain the cocktail into your prepared glass filled with fresh crushed ice.
  5. Add the Rum Float. Slowly pour the overproof rum over the back of a spoon to float it on top of the drink.
  6. Garnish and Serve. Garnish the cocktail with a mint sprig and a pineapple wedge or cherry, if desired. Serve immediately with a straw.

Notes

  • This drink is famously strong—enjoy responsibly and avoid serving more than one per person in a sitting.
  • You can use store-bought passion fruit syrup or make your own for a fresher flavor.
  • If you cannot find falernum liqueur, substitute with a blend of almond syrup, a dash of lime, and clove for a similar taste.
  • Customize your garnish with other tropical fruits like orange wheels or edible flowers for extra flair.
