Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- Red food coloring
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 4 oz cream cheese (optional)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar (optional)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth, then remove from heat.
- Transfer the butter-cocoa mixture to a mixing bowl. Stir in granulated sugar and brown sugar, then whisk in eggs, one at a time, followed by vanilla extract.
- Add red food coloring to achieve your desired intensity of red. Stir until fully incorporated.
- Fold in the flour and salt until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- If using the cream cheese swirl, beat together the cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth, then dollop and swirl into the brownie batter.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan before slicing and serving.
Notes
- If you want a more intense red color, add more food coloring until you reach the desired shade.
- For extra flavor and texture, fold in chocolate chips or chopped walnuts.
- Leftover brownies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 2 months.
- Reheat brownies in the microwave for 10–15 seconds to enjoy a warm, gooey treat.
- If you prefer, omit the cream cheese swirl for a simpler version of these red velvet brownies.
