Description

Thai Roti Bread is a popular street food snack in Thailand, featuring soft, chewy, and crispy pan-fried flatbreads. Traditionally enjoyed with condensed milk or sugar and sometimes filled with fruits or eggs, this easy-to-make bread requires only a handful of pantry staples and is perfect for breakfast, snacks, or dessert.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or vegetable oil (plus extra for frying)

Toppings & Serving

  • Sweetened condensed milk (for drizzling)
  • Sugar (optional, for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Whisk the egg with warm water and melted butter. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry, stirring until a dough forms. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. Rest the Dough: Divide the dough into 6-8 balls and coat each lightly with oil. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Let the dough rest for at least 1 hour (up to 2 hours) at room temperature to relax the gluten for easy stretching.
  3. Shape the Roti: On a lightly oiled surface, use your hands to stretch each dough ball into a thin, almost transparent circle—about 8 inches in diameter. Be gentle to avoid tearing, and oil your hands as needed to prevent sticking.
  4. Fry the Roti: Heat a nonstick pan or skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of oil. Place the stretched dough onto the pan. Cook for about 1-2 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy spots appear. Flip and cook the other side.
  5. Serve: Remove from the pan and place on a cutting board. Drizzle generously with sweetened condensed milk and sprinkle sugar if desired. Slice into wedges or squares and enjoy warm.

Notes

  • Letting the dough rest is essential for easy stretching—do not skip this step!
  • Experiment with fillings—banana, Nutella, or scrambled egg are popular in Thailand.
  • Serve immediately for the best crispy-chewy texture.
  • These are best fresh but can be reheated in a pan on low heat.
