- 2 medium tart apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch wedges
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- Peel and slice the apples into 1/4-inch wedges. Set aside.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
- In a separate large bowl, cream butter and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
- Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture, alternating with milk, until just combined.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top. Arrange apple slices on top, pressing lightly into the batter.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
Notes
- Top with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or toasted almonds for added indulgence.
- Serve with coffee or tea, or alongside cheese or fruit for a brunch spread.
- Bake in ramekins for individual servings or layer in a trifle for a creative dessert.
- Store at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
- Freeze individual slices wrapped tightly for up to 3 months; thaw and reheat gently before serving.
- Use gluten-free flour with xanthan gum for a gluten-free version.
- Reduce sugar by one-third for a less sweet variation without sacrificing flavor.
