Description
Delicious and flaky Spinach and Feta Puff Pastry Twists, perfect for a savory appetizer or snack. These golden-brown twists combine tender spinach, creamy feta, and aromatic spices wrapped in buttery puff pastry, baked to crisp perfection.
Ingredients
Puff Pastry Twists
- 1 sheet puff pastry (fresh or frozen, thawed)
- 1 cup fresh spinach or 1/2 cup frozen spinach (thawed and drained)
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese (preferably from block)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped (optional)
- Pinch of nutmeg
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Optional: 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, chili flakes, or chopped parsley
- 1 large egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Sauté Spinach: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add fresh spinach and cook until wilted, about 2-3 minutes. Alternatively, if using frozen spinach, thaw completely and squeeze out excess moisture.
- Mix Filling: In a bowl, combine the cooked spinach with crumbled feta cheese, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Add any desired herbs or chili flakes for extra flavor and mix well.
- Preheat Oven: Set the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
- Roll Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet into a rectangle shape to ensure even thickness.
- Spread Filling: Evenly spread the spinach and feta mixture over half of the puff pastry sheet, leaving about a 1/2 inch border around the edges to allow for sealing.
- Fold and Seal: Carefully fold the pastry over the filling so the edges meet. Press and pinch the edges firmly to seal the filling inside and prevent leakage.
- Cut and Twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the folded pastry into 1-inch wide strips. Gently twist each strip several times to create spiral shapes.
- Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the tops of the twists lightly with the egg wash. This will give them a beautiful golden color when baked.
- Bake: Arrange the twists on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is fully puffed and golden brown.
Notes
- Make sure to squeeze out as much water as possible from the spinach to avoid soggy pastry.
- The filling mixture can be customized with additional herbs or spices like parsley, oregano, or chili flakes to suit your taste.
- If you do not have fresh spinach, frozen works well but must be fully thawed and drained.
- Use an egg wash for a shiny, golden finish or substitute with milk if you prefer.
- Serve these twists warm for the best texture and flavor.
- These twists can be made ahead and reheated in the oven to refresh their crispness.
