Description

This Southern Soul Chili recipe is a hearty and flavorful dish that combines ground beef or turkey with smoked sausage, beans, and a blend of spices. Perfect for a cozy meal on a chilly day!


Ingredients

Meat:

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1/2 pound smoked sausage, sliced

Vegetables:

  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Canned Goods:

  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed

Spices and Seasonings:

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Additional:

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water

Instructions

  1. Cook Meat: In a large pot, cook ground beef or turkey over medium heat until browned. Add sliced smoked sausage and cook until lightly browned.
  2. Add Vegetables: Add diced onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté until softened.
  3. Incorporate Ingredients: Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, beans, spices, salt, pepper, brown sugar, and broth. Mix well.
  4. Simmer: Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 30–45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Adjust Seasonings: Taste and adjust seasonings. Serve hot with desired toppings.
