  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or olive oil
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (more as needed)
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal (optional for dusting pan)
  • 1 egg white + 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)


Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix Ingredients: Stir in oil, salt, and 2 cups of the flour. Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Rise the Dough: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape and Bake: Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, let rise again, then bake at 375°F for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Cool and Serve: Let the bread cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, place a pan of hot water in the oven while baking.
