Description
A bold, smoky, and savory plant-based alternative to ground beef made with extra-firm tofu. Perfect for tacos, bowls, nachos, and meal prep.
Ingredients
- 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp maple syrup
- 1/4 tsp liquid smoke
- 1 tbsp cornstarch or arrowroot powder
Instructions
- Press the tofu for at least 10–20 minutes to remove excess moisture.
- Crumble tofu into small bite-sized pieces into a large bowl.
- Add olive oil, soy sauce, tomato paste, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, maple syrup, liquid smoke, and cornstarch. Mix thoroughly to coat the tofu.
- Spread seasoned tofu on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 25–30 minutes, stirring halfway, until golden and crispy. Alternatively, sauté in a skillet over medium heat until browned and crisp.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if desired. Serve hot in your favorite dishes.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Freeze cooled tofu crumbles for up to 2 months. Thaw and reheat in a skillet for best texture.
- Use tamari for a gluten-free version.
