Description

A bold, smoky, and savory plant-based alternative to ground beef made with extra-firm tofu. Perfect for tacos, bowls, nachos, and meal prep.

Ingredients

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp liquid smoke
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch or arrowroot powder

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for at least 10–20 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Crumble tofu into small bite-sized pieces into a large bowl.
  3. Add olive oil, soy sauce, tomato paste, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, maple syrup, liquid smoke, and cornstarch. Mix thoroughly to coat the tofu.
  4. Spread seasoned tofu on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 25–30 minutes, stirring halfway, until golden and crispy. Alternatively, sauté in a skillet over medium heat until browned and crisp.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired. Serve hot in your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze cooled tofu crumbles for up to 2 months. Thaw and reheat in a skillet for best texture.
  • Use tamari for a gluten-free version.
