Description

Shrimp Oreganata is a classic Italian-American baked shrimp dish featuring large shrimp topped with a flavorful breadcrumb mixture of Parmesan cheese, garlic, herbs, and a hint of lemon. Perfect as an appetizer or main course, this easy-to-make recipe delivers a crispy, golden topping and tender, juicy shrimp in every bite.

Ingredients

Shrimp

  • 1 1/2 pounds large shrimp (peeled and deveined, tails on)

Breadcrumb Topping

  • 1/2 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Additional Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease a baking dish or an oven-safe skillet to prevent sticking.
  2. Arrange Shrimp: Lay the shrimp in a single layer in the prepared dish, positioning them tail side up for even cooking and presentation.
  3. Make Breadcrumb Mixture: In a small bowl, combine the Italian-style breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, chopped parsley, dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Drizzle in the olive oil and lemon juice, then mix thoroughly until the breadcrumb mixture is evenly moistened.
  4. Top Shrimp: Spoon the breadcrumb mixture over each shrimp, pressing down gently so the topping adheres well to the surface of the shrimp.
  5. Bake Shrimp: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the shrimp turn pink and are cooked through, and the breadcrumb topping is golden and crispy.
  6. Optional Broiling: For an extra crispy topping, broil the shrimp for an additional 1 to 2 minutes at the end of the baking time, carefully watching to prevent burning.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and serve hot with lemon wedges on the side to squeeze over the shrimp for added brightness and flavor.

Notes

  • This dish pairs beautifully with pasta, risotto, or crusty bread for a complete meal.
  • To save time, prepare the breadcrumb topping in advance and refrigerate until ready to use, making the assembly quicker.
