Description

These shrimp and vegetable dumplings are a delicious and savory appetizer or snack featuring a flavorful combination of finely chopped shrimp, cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, and aromatics wrapped in tender dumpling wrappers. Pan-fried until golden and then steamed for a tender, juicy filling, these dumplings are perfect for serving with soy sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 1/2 lb shrimp, peeled, deveined, and finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup cabbage, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup carrots, grated
  • 1/4 cup mushrooms, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Dumplings

  • 1 package dumpling wrappers (round, about 3 inches in diameter)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/4 cup water (for steaming)

Instructions

  1. Prepare filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the finely chopped shrimp, cabbage, grated carrots, chopped mushrooms (if using), green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Assemble dumplings: Lay one dumpling wrapper on a clean surface and place about 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center. Dab your finger in water and moisten the edges of the wrapper.
  3. Seal dumplings: Fold the wrapper in half over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges together firmly to seal. Optionally pleat the edges to create a traditional look or simply pinch to seal completely.
  4. Repeat assembly: Continue assembling the dumplings with the remaining wrappers and filling until all are prepared.
  5. Heat oil: In a large non-stick skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  6. Pan-fry dumplings: Place the dumplings in a single layer in the skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the bottoms turn golden brown and crisp.
  7. Steam dumplings: Carefully add 1/4 cup of water to the skillet and immediately cover with a lid to trap steam. Allow dumplings to cook for an additional 4 to 5 minutes until the wrappers are tender and the filling is cooked through.
  8. Crisp bottoms: Remove the lid and let the dumplings cook uncovered for 1 to 2 minutes to re-crisp the bottoms and evaporate remaining water.
  9. Serve: Remove dumplings from the skillet and serve warm with soy sauce or your preferred dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute shrimp with finely chopped tofu or additional vegetables.
  • Ensure dumpling wrappers are kept covered with a damp towel to prevent drying out during assembly.
  • If preferred, you can freeze uncooked dumplings for up to 1 month; cook from frozen adding a couple extra minutes to the steaming time.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, especially salt, to suit your preference.
  • Serving with spicy chili oil or garlic soy dipping sauce enhances the flavors nicely.
