Description

Soft and fluffy sesame seed bread rolls made from scratch, perfect for dinner or sandwiches. These homemade yeast rolls feature a golden crust topped with toasted sesame seeds for added flavor and crunch.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 egg (for dough)

Topping

  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Add the foamy yeast mixture, vegetable oil or melted butter, and one egg. Stir until a dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic, which develops the gluten for a tender roll.
  4. First rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Shape the rolls: Punch down the risen dough to release the air. Divide it into 12 equal pieces and shape each into a smooth ball. Place the balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced evenly.
  6. Second rise: Cover the shaped rolls again and let them rise for another 30–40 minutes until they puff up noticeably.
  7. Prepare for baking: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg wash to give them a shiny, golden crust, then sprinkle generously with sesame seeds.
  8. Bake: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15–18 minutes or until they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped.
  9. Cool and serve: Allow the rolls to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving to enjoy their soft, fluffy texture.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, lightly toast the sesame seeds before sprinkling them on the rolls.
  • These rolls freeze well; reheat them in the oven to restore freshness.
