Description
Sausage Gravy Biscuit Pie is a hearty and comforting Southern-inspired breakfast dish featuring a rich, creamy sausage gravy layered between tender biscuit halves and baked to golden perfection. This savory pie combines the classic flavors of breakfast sausage and cheesy biscuits into a convenient casserole, perfect for brunch or a cozy morning meal.
Ingredients
Sausage Gravy
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
Biscuit Base and Topping
- 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough (8 biscuits)
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Retain the fat unless there is an excessive amount.
- Make the Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage and stir well to coat. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in the milk and bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir continuously until the gravy thickens, about 5–7 minutes.
- Season the Gravy: Add black pepper, salt, and garlic powder to taste, stirring well. Remove the skillet from heat once the gravy is thick and creamy.
- Prepare the Biscuit Layers: Cut each biscuit in half horizontally to create 16 thinner rounds. Press 8 biscuit halves evenly into the bottom of the greased pie dish to form the crust layer.
- Assemble the Pie: Pour the sausage gravy over the biscuit base, spreading it evenly. Top with the remaining 8 biscuit halves. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top for extra flavor and richness.
- Bake the Pie: Place the pie dish in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
- Rest and Garnish: Remove the pie from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
- For extra flavor variation, use spicy sausage for a bit of heat or maple sausage for a sweet-savory twist.
- To add more cheesy goodness, stir shredded cheese directly into the gravy before assembling.
- This versatile dish works well for breakfast, brunch, or even a cozy dinner option.
