Ingredients
Dough
- 1 (13.8-oz) can refrigerated pizza dough
Filling
- 1 lb pork sausage
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 large egg (lightly beaten)
- 2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
- ¼ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp fennel seeds
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp pepper
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning (divided)
Topping
- 2 Tbsp butter (melted)
- 1 clove garlic (crushed)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare a cookie sheet by spraying it with nonstick cooking spray or lining it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the pork sausage until it is fully browned with no pink remaining. Once cooked, drain off any excess grease to keep the filling from being too oily.
- Mix Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage with shredded mozzarella cheese, lightly beaten egg, Dijon mustard, onion powder, fennel seeds, salt, pepper, and half a teaspoon of Italian seasoning. Stir well to evenly distribute all flavors.
- Prepare Dough and Roll: Unroll the refrigerated pizza dough onto a clean surface. Spread the sausage and cheese mixture evenly over the dough. Starting from the long side, carefully roll the dough into a loaf shape and press the edges to seal it well. Cut 3 to 4 slits on the top of the loaf to allow steam to escape while baking. Place the loaf on the prepared cookie sheet.
- Apply Topping: Combine the melted butter with the remaining half teaspoon of Italian seasoning and crushed garlic. Brush this flavorful mixture generously over the top of the rolled loaf to give it a golden, aromatic crust.
- Bake: Place the cookie sheet in the preheated oven and bake the sausage bread for 25 to 28 minutes or until the loaf is golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
- Serve: Cut the bread into 1-inch diagonal slices and serve warm for the best taste experience.
Notes
- You can substitute pork sausage with turkey sausage for a leaner option.
- No need to pre-bake the dough, as the roll bakes fully with the filling inside.
- Use parchment paper to ensure easy cleanup and prevent sticking.
- The fennel seeds add a subtle anise flavor that complements the sausage well—don’t skip them!
- For a spicier version, add some crushed red pepper flakes to the filling mixture.
