Ingredients
Sausage & Cream Cheese Filling
- 1 lb pork sausage
- 6 oz cream cheese, softened
French Toast Batter
- 3 large eggs
- ⅔ cup milk
- 2 Tbsp maple syrup
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Assembly & Cooking
- 1 loaf Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Hearty White Bread
- 3 Tbsp butter, divided
- Additional maple syrup for serving
Instructions
- Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook the pork sausage until it is no longer pink and fully cooked through. Drain the excess fat and set the sausage aside to cool slightly.
- Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage with the softened cream cheese. Mix until the sausage is evenly coated with the cream cheese, creating a creamy, savory filling.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Take 6 slices of the hearty white bread and spread the sausage and cream cheese mixture evenly over each. Top each with another slice of bread to make 6 sandwiches layered with the savory filling in the center.
- Make Egg Mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, salt, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
- Dip Sandwiches: Submerge each sandwich in the egg mixture, making sure both sides are fully soaked to absorb the flavor and moisture for a tender finish.
- Cook French Toast: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place two of the dipped sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side, or until each side is golden brown and cooked through. Remove and repeat the process with the remaining butter and sandwiches.
- Serve: Serve the stuffed French toast hot, drizzled with extra maple syrup as desired for a sweet contrast to the savory filling.
Notes
- Use hearty, thick bread slices for best results to hold the filling without falling apart.
- Ensure the cream cheese is softened to mix well with the sausage.
- You can adjust the sweetness in the batter by adding more or less maple syrup to taste.
- If preferred, substitute pork sausage with turkey sausage for a leaner option.
- This dish is best enjoyed fresh but can be kept warm in a low oven while finishing the batch.
