Description
This Saltine Toffee Christmas Crack recipe is a delightful holiday treat featuring a crispy saltine cracker base topped with buttery caramel and melted chocolate. Quick to make with minimal ingredients, it’s perfect for festive gatherings or as a sweet homemade gift.
Ingredients
Base
- Saltine Crackers (enough to cover a 9×13 inch pan in a single layer)
Caramel Topping
- 1 cup Dark Brown Sugar
- 1 cup Butter
Chocolate Topping
- 12 oz. Chocolate Chips
Optional Toppings
- Nuts, sprinkles, or sea salt (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the toffee base.
- Prepare Pan: Line a 9 by 13 inch pan with aluminum foil for easy removal and cleanup. Lay a single, even layer of saltine crackers covering the entire bottom of the pan.
- Make Caramel Sauce: In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of dark brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue boiling and stirring for 3 minutes to ensure it thickens properly.
- Pour Caramel Over Crackers: Remove the caramel from heat and immediately pour it evenly over the layer of saltine crackers in the pan, making sure all crackers are covered.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 7 minutes. This step helps the caramel soak into the crackers and achieves the classic toffee texture.
- Add Chocolate: Remove the pan from the oven and evenly sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot caramel and crackers. Let the chocolate sit for a couple of minutes to melt, then spread it smoothly over the entire surface using a spatula, similar to icing a cake.
- Cool and Set: Add any desired toppings such as nuts, sprinkles, or sea salt at this stage. Transfer the pan to the refrigerator and chill until the chocolate is set and the toffee is firm, about 1 to 2 hours.
- Serve: Once cooled and set, break the toffee into pieces and enjoy your Christmas Crack treats!
Notes
- Line the pan with aluminum foil to make removal and cleanup easier.
- Use a rolling boil for the caramel to ensure it’s thick and rich.
- Spread the chocolate evenly for a smooth finish.
- Feel free to customize with nuts or sea salt for extra flavor and texture.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness.
