Description

This Salt and Pepper Tofu recipe features extra-firm tofu cubes that are perfectly crisped and seasoned with a blend of salt, black and white pepper, garlic, and a hint of chili flakes. Stir-fried with aromatic garlic, green onions, and optional Thai chili, it is a flavorful and satisfying vegan main course inspired by Chinese cuisine.

Ingredients

Tofu and Coating

  • 1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu, pressed and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)

For Stir-Frying

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 small chili (like red Thai chili), finely sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. Press Tofu: Press the tofu for at least 20 minutes to remove excess moisture, which helps achieve a crisper texture when cooked. Then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Prepare Coating Mixture: In a bowl, mix cornstarch, salt, black pepper, white pepper, garlic powder, and chili flakes. Toss the tofu cubes in this mixture until evenly coated on all sides.
  3. Fry Tofu: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes in a single layer and fry for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side, turning them carefully to ensure all sides become golden brown and crispy.
  4. Stir-fry Aromatics: Add the minced garlic, sliced green onions, and finely sliced chili to the pan. Stir-fry together with the tofu for 1 to 2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and the aromatics are lightly cooked but still vibrant.
  5. Serve: Remove from heat and serve the salt and pepper tofu immediately to enjoy while hot and crispy.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, consider using an air fryer or double-frying the tofu.
  • White pepper adds authentic flavor but can be omitted if unavailable.
  • Adjust the amount of chili flakes and fresh chili to match your preferred spice level.
