Description

Russian Dressing is a creamy, tangy, and slightly spicy condiment famous for its beautiful blush color. Made with mayonnaise, ketchup, onion, and a touch of horseradish, it’s the classic choice for Reuben sandwiches, delicious as a veggie dip, and a flavor-packed alternative to Thousand Island on salads.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Main Dressing

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce (such as Tabasco), or to taste

Flavor Base

  • 2 tablespoons finely minced onion
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional, for color and spice)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Aromatics: In a small bowl, finely mince the onion and garlic. This ensures their flavor blends smoothly into the dressing, without any large chunks.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, prepared horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, white vinegar, and hot sauce until the mixture is well emulsified and has a rosy hue.
  3. Add Aromatics and Seasonings: Stir in the minced onion, garlic, and optional paprika (if using). Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Whisk until all ingredients are incorporated and the dressing is smooth.
  4. Chill: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dressing for at least 30 minutes. This resting time allows the flavors to meld and deepen.
  5. Serve: Give the dressing a good stir and taste for seasoning before serving. Spread on sandwiches, use as a salad dressing, or as a dip for vegetables and chips!

Notes

  • If you prefer a sweeter style, add a teaspoon of sweet pickle relish or a pinch of sugar.
  • For extra tang, replace some of the mayonnaise with sour cream or Greek yogurt.
  • This dressing keeps in the refrigerator for up to one week in an airtight container.
  • Adjust the horseradish and hot sauce to make it milder or spicier.
