Description

These Red Velvet Chocolate Blossom Cookies are a festive and delicious treat featuring soft, cocoa-infused red velvet dough rolled in red sugar and topped with a melted Dove Chocolate Heart. Perfect for holidays or special occasions, these cookies have a beautiful appearance with a rich, creamy chocolate center that melts slightly when pressed into the warm cookies right after baking.

Ingredients

Chocolate

  • 36 Dove Chocolate Hearts (1 package, 8.87 ounces)

Wet Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 Âľ cups all-purpose flour
  • ÂĽ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ÂĽ teaspoon kosher salt

Coating

  • Red sprinkling sugar and/or sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Freeze Chocolate Hearts: Place the Dove Chocolate Hearts in the freezer for at least one hour so they remain solid and do not melt quickly when placed on warm cookies.
  2. Prepare Oven and Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and promote even baking.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the room temperature butter and granulated sugar together for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy to create a smooth base for the dough.
  4. Add Wet Ingredients: Mix in the egg, milk, red food coloring, and vanilla extract until the mixture is well combined and uniformly colored.
  5. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and kosher salt to ensure even distribution of leavening and flavor.
  6. Incorporate Dry Into Wet: Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, stirring just until blended to avoid overmixing which can make cookies tough.
  7. Shape and Roll Dough Balls: Using a tablespoon, scoop and form the dough into 1-inch balls. Roll each ball in red sprinkling sugar or sprinkles to coat them nicely, then arrange them spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake Cookies: Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, until edges are set but centers remain soft.
  9. Add Chocolate Hearts to Cookies: Remove the cookies immediately from the oven and press one frozen Dove Chocolate Heart into the center of each cookie, allowing the chocolate to melt slightly into the warm dough.
  10. Cool Completely: Transfer the cookies to a wire rack and let cool completely so the chocolate can set properly and the cookies firm up.

Notes

  • Freezing the chocolate hearts before baking prevents them from melting too quickly and losing shape.
  • Do not overmix the dough after adding dry ingredients to keep cookies tender.
  • Rolling the dough balls in red sugar adds a festive sparkle and extra texture.
  • Press the chocolate hearts into the cookies immediately after baking while still warm for best melting effect.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
