Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder

- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
- 2 teaspoons white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Purple gel food coloring (as needed)
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
- Prepare the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.
- Mix the wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, oil, buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla, and purple gel food coloring.
- Combine and bake: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mix until smooth, divide the batter between pans, and bake for 30–35 minutes.
- Make the frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter, gradually add powdered sugar, mix in vanilla and salt until smooth.
