Ingredients

Main Cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • Purple gel food coloring (as needed for desired shade)

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, then line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Mix wet ingredients: In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well. Mix in vanilla. Combine buttermilk and vinegar in a small bowl.
  4. Combine and color: Add dry ingredients to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk mixture. Add purple food coloring to achieve desired shade.
  5. Bake: Divide batter between pans and bake for 25-30 minutes. Cool in pans, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  6. Make frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add sugar gradually, then mix in vanilla and salt.
  7. Frost cake: Frost the cooled cakes, stacking if desired. Decorate as desired.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for vibrant color.
  • Works well for cupcakes or layered cakes.
