Description
A nostalgic and comforting sandwich made with ground beef simmered in a sweet and tangy ketchup-based sauce, served warm on soft rolls. This classic from Pennsylvania’s coal country is a community favorite and an easy crowd-pleaser.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
- 1 yellow onion, finely diced
- 1 cup tomato ketchup
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 hamburger rolls
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and diced onion. Cook until beef is browned and onion is soft. Drain excess fat, leaving about a tablespoon.
- Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well until evenly combined.
- Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Uncover and simmer 5 more minutes if you prefer a thicker sauce.
- Spoon the hot beef mixture onto hamburger rolls. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- Add cheddar slices, pickles, or coleslaw for extra flavor and texture.
- Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Make ahead and reheat for quick lunches or party sliders.
