Ingredients

Main Patty Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Additional Patty Melt Ingredients:

  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

For the secret sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and cook the sliced onions until deeply caramelized, about 20–25 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together all the secret sauce ingredients until smooth; refrigerate until ready to use.
  3. Form the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 thin oval patties.
  4. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked. Remove from skillet.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Spread secret sauce on each bread slice. Layer cheese, patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, and top with another bread slice. Butter the outsides of each sandwich.
  6. Grill the Sandwiches: Return to skillet, cook over medium heat until bread is golden and cheese is melted, about 3–4 minutes per side. Slice and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use marble rye or sourdough for a flavor twist.
  • The sauce doubles as a great dip for fries or onion rings.
