Description
Parker House Rolls are soft, buttery yeast rolls with a tender crumb and a slightly sweet flavor. Perfect as a side dish for dinner or holidays, these classic American rolls are made from enriched dough brushed with butter, folded, and baked to golden perfection.
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk, warm (about 110°F)
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened, divided (1/4 cup + 1/4 cup)
- Additional melted butter for brushing
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Mix Dough: Add the egg, 1/4 cup softened butter, salt, and 3 1/2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms. Add more flour if needed until the dough pulls away from the sides but remains slightly sticky.
- Knead Dough: Knead the dough by hand or with a dough hook for 6–8 minutes until it is smooth and elastic, improving gluten development for a tender roll.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours until doubled in size.
- Shape Rolls: Punch down the dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness. Cut the dough into 2 x 3-inch rectangles. Brush each piece with the remaining 1/4 cup softened butter. Fold each rectangle in half lengthwise (short end to short end).
- Second Rise: Place the folded rolls folded side down in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover loosely and let them rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Finish: Immediately after baking, brush the warm rolls with additional melted butter to enhance flavor and softness. Serve warm.
Notes
- For extra flavor, mix a pinch of garlic powder or your favorite herbs into the softened butter before brushing the rolls.
- These rolls freeze very well; reheat them in a warm oven before serving for fresh taste.
- You can prepare the dough a day ahead and refrigerate it after the first rise, then shape and continue as directed.
