These classic American dinner rolls feature a tender crumb and a golden, buttery crust achieved by folding each roll before baking. Ideal for holidays, family dinners, or any time you crave homemade bread, these rolls are simple to prepare and delicious fresh from the oven.
Ingredients
Dough
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 cup whole milk, warm (about 110°F)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened, divided
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Activate yeast: In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm milk, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Let this mixture sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating that the yeast is active and ready to use.
- Prepare dough: To the yeast mixture, add the egg, salt, and half (1/4 cup) of the softened butter. Gradually incorporate the flour while mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough with a dough hook attachment or by hand for 6–8 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape rolls: Punch down the risen dough and turn it onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle about 1/2-inch thick. Cut the dough into 2 1/2-inch circles or squares. Lightly fold each piece in half and place them seam-side down in a buttered 9×13-inch baking dish or on a parchment-lined baking sheet, arranging the pieces so they touch slightly. Cover and let them rise again for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
- Bake rolls: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15–18 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
- Brush with butter: Immediately upon removing from the oven, brush the rolls with the remaining 1/4 cup of melted butter to give them a rich, glossy finish and extra flavor. Serve the rolls warm for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- For extra flavor, brush the rolls with garlic herb butter instead of plain melted butter after baking.
- The rolls can be shaped ahead of time and refrigerated overnight. Allow them to come to room temperature before baking to ensure proper rising.
