Dough
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
For Brushing
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5–10 minutes, until the mixture is foamy.
- Make the Dough: Add the flour, salt, and softened butter to the yeast mixture. Mix with a wooden spoon or the dough hook of a stand mixer until a dough begins to form. Knead for 7–8 minutes, either by hand or with the mixer, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Breadsticks: Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 7-inch rope and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Second Rise: Cover the shaped breadsticks loosely with a towel and let rise for another 30–45 minutes, until puffy.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the breadsticks for 12–14 minutes, or until just golden brown on top.
- Brush and Serve: While the breadsticks are warm, mix the melted butter with garlic powder and salt. Brush generously over the tops of the breadsticks before serving.
Notes
- If you prefer a softer breadstick, don’t overbake—look for a very light golden color.
- Breadsticks are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven for a few minutes.
- Feel free to add a sprinkle of parsley or grated Parmesan for extra flavor.
- To freeze, bake breadsticks without the final butter brushing, cool completely, then freeze. Reheat and brush with garlic butter before serving.
