Description

Enjoy the warm, pillowy-soft Olive Garden Breadsticks right at home! These golden, garlicky breadsticks are perfectly chewy on the inside and lightly crisp on the outside—just like your favorite Italian restaurant. Paired with a buttery garlic topping, they’re ideal for serving as an appetizer, alongside pasta dishes, or for soaking up rich sauces.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Dough

  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

For Brushing

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5–10 minutes, until the mixture is foamy.
  2. Make the Dough: Add the flour, salt, and softened butter to the yeast mixture. Mix with a wooden spoon or the dough hook of a stand mixer until a dough begins to form. Knead for 7–8 minutes, either by hand or with the mixer, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  3. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Breadsticks: Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 7-inch rope and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  5. Second Rise: Cover the shaped breadsticks loosely with a towel and let rise for another 30–45 minutes, until puffy.
  6. Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the breadsticks for 12–14 minutes, or until just golden brown on top.
  7. Brush and Serve: While the breadsticks are warm, mix the melted butter with garlic powder and salt. Brush generously over the tops of the breadsticks before serving.

Notes

  • If you prefer a softer breadstick, don’t overbake—look for a very light golden color.
  • Breadsticks are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven for a few minutes.
  • Feel free to add a sprinkle of parsley or grated Parmesan for extra flavor.
  • To freeze, bake breadsticks without the final butter brushing, cool completely, then freeze. Reheat and brush with garlic butter before serving.
