Description
Old Time Oven Peach Cobbler is a classic Southern dessert featuring juicy, fresh peaches baked under a golden, fluffy batter topping. This comforting dish combines sweet and spiced peaches with a tender, buttery crust that’s perfect served warm, especially alongside vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Ingredients
Peach Filling
- 8 cups fresh peaches, peeled and sliced (about 6-7 medium peaches)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
Batter Topping
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish or a similar oven-safe dish to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Peaches: In a large bowl, combine the peeled and sliced peaches with granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and cornstarch if using. Toss everything well and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the peaches to release their natural juices and the flavors to meld.
- Make Batter: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and granulated sugar (for the topping). Gradually add the milk and melted butter, mixing until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Assemble Cobbler: Pour the peach mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish, spreading out the juices as uniformly as possible. Dollop or spoon the batter over the peaches; it does not need to cover the peaches entirely, as it will spread during baking.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes. The cobbler is done when the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the batter comes out clean. The peach juices should be bubbling along the edges, signaling a perfectly cooked filling.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the cobbler to cool slightly before serving. This dessert is delicious served warm and pairs wonderfully with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for added indulgence.
Notes
- If you prefer a thicker filling, be sure to include the cornstarch when mixing the peaches.
- Fresh, ripe peaches provide the best flavor, but frozen peaches can be used if fresh are unavailable; make sure to thaw and drain excess liquid beforehand.
- Butter the baking dish well to ensure easy serving and prevent sticking.
- The batter topping can be spooned unevenly; it naturally spreads during baking, creating a rustic look.
- Let the cobbler cool briefly to allow the filling to set before serving.
- For an extra touch, sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar on top of the batter before baking.
