Description

These Non-Spooky Black Cat Cupcakes are a charming and festive treat perfect for Halloween or any cat lover’s celebration. Featuring moist chocolate or vanilla cupcakes covered in rich chocolate icing and decorated with chocolate sprinkles, fondant eyes, butterscotch chip noses, and taffy ears, these cupcakes are both visually fun and deliciously decadent.

Ingredients

Cupcakes

  • 1 box of cake mix (chocolate or vanilla), prepared according to instructions (or homemade if preferred)

Frosting and Decorations

  • Chocolate icing
  • Chocolate sprinkles
  • Butterscotch chips (for the nose)
  • Yellow fondant or yellow Smarties or yellow M&Ms (for the eyes)
  • Chocolate taffy or Tootsie Rolls, slightly warmed and rolled flat (for the ears)
  • Extra chocolate sprinkles for the eyes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cupcakes: Bake the cupcakes using the cake mix or your preferred homemade recipe according to the package or recipe instructions. Once baked, allow the cupcakes to cool completely to ensure the frosting adheres properly.
  2. Frost the Cupcakes: Generously frost the cooled cupcakes with chocolate icing, creating a smooth surface for decorating.
  3. Add “Fur” with Sprinkles: Sprinkle chocolate sprinkles evenly over the frosted cupcakes to cover them entirely, mimicking the texture of a cat’s fur.
  4. Create the Eyes: Roll small balls of yellow fondant or use yellow Smarties or M&Ms for the eyes. Flatten these slightly and attach each to the front upper portion of the cupcake using a small dot of icing. Place a chocolate sprinkle at the center of each eye to represent the pupils.
  5. Add the Nose: Attach a butterscotch chip just below the eyes as the cat’s nose, securing it with a small dab of icing.
  6. Shape the Ears: Soften the chocolate taffy or Tootsie Rolls by warming slightly until pliable. Roll it flat and cut into small triangles to form the ears. Place and press these triangles onto the top edge of each cupcake, using icing if needed for extra hold.
  7. Final Touches: Make sure all decorations are firmly attached. Optionally, add delicate whiskers to each cupcake by piping thin lines of icing extending outward from the nose area to complete the black cat look.

Notes

  • Ensure cupcakes are completely cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Warm the taffy or Tootsie Rolls gently to avoid becoming too sticky or melted.
  • You can substitute yellow fondant with small yellow candies like Smarties or M&Ms if fondant is unavailable.
  • For a vanilla cake option, use vanilla cake mix instead of chocolate for a lighter contrast.
  • Allow all decorations to set before serving to keep the cupcake appearance intact.
