- ½ cup sour cream

- 1 cup chopped dates
- ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or prepare a shaped nativity mold if using.
- Mix dry ingredients: Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger in a medium bowl.
- Cream butter and sugars: In a large bowl, cream the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.
- Combine wet and dry: Mix in sour cream and buttermilk. Gradually add dry ingredients, folding in dates and nuts if using.
- Bake: Pour batter into the pan and bake for 40-45 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
