Description

This Miso Garlic Butter Rice is a simple yet flavorful side dish that combines the rich umami of white miso with garlic and butter, finished with scallions and optional toasty garnishes. Perfectly comforting, incredibly aromatic, and versatile enough to pair with just about anything.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups short- or medium-grain white rice
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp white miso paste
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp chopped scallions or chives
  • Optional: 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • Optional: 1 tbsp nori flakes

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Cook according to package instructions using a rice cooker or stovetop method.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt butter. Add minced garlic and sauté until golden and fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  3. Stir in miso paste and soy sauce. Mix until the miso dissolves completely and a smooth sauce forms.
  4. Add the cooked rice to the skillet. Gently toss until all the grains are evenly coated with the miso garlic butter.
  5. Turn off heat, stir in chopped scallions or chives, and sprinkle with sesame seeds or nori flakes if using.
  6. Serve warm as a side or base for your favorite protein or vegetable dishes.

Notes

  • Use white (shiro) miso for a milder flavor or red miso for a stronger taste—adjust quantities accordingly.
  • For a vegan version, substitute butter with plant-based butter or neutral oil and confirm your miso is vegan-friendly.
  • To elevate the presentation, serve in ramekins topped with a soft-boiled egg or drizzle of chili crisp.
