Description

Lowcountry Chewies are a classic Southern dessert bar known for their chewy texture and rich, buttery flavor. These brown sugar blondies are easy to make and perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth.

Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare the pan: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Mix butter and sugar: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and brown sugar until smooth and combined.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla: Add the eggs and vanilla extract, stirring until well incorporated.
  4. Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Optional pecans: Fold in chopped pecans if using.
  6. Bake: Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool and cut: Allow to cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • These bars get chewier as they cool.
  • For extra richness, sprinkle the top with a light dusting of powdered sugar or drizzle with melted chocolate.
  • You can also swap pecans for walnuts or leave them out entirely.
