Description

Indulge in the warm, spiced flavors of traditional German Lebkuchen cookies. These soft, honey-sweetened treats are rich with aromatic spices and crunchy nuts, perfect for the holiday season or any time you crave a cozy, homemade cookie.

Ingredients

Dough:

  • 1 cup honey
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts (almonds or hazelnuts)
  • 1/4 cup candied orange peel, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup candied lemon peel, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Making the Dough: In a medium saucepan, heat honey, brown sugar, and butter until melted. Cool for 10 minutes, then stir in the egg. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, add honey mixture, nuts, and peels. Mix in milk gradually to form a sticky dough. Chill for at least 4 hours.
  2. Baking: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Shape dough into balls or rounds, place on lined sheets, and bake for 12–15 minutes until golden. Cool on a rack. Optionally, glaze or dip cookies once cooled.

Notes

  • Lebkuchen flavors develop over time; store in an airtight container.
  • Decorate with icing or sprinkles for festive presentation.
