Description
These Jamaican Beef Patties are savory, spiced meat-filled pastries with a flaky golden crust—a popular snack or meal in the Caribbean. The flavorful beef filling is encased in a turmeric-infused pastry for a delicious taste of Jamaica.
Ingredients
For the pastry:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon ground turmeric, 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter (cubed), 1/4 cup vegetable shortening, 1/2 cup cold water
For the filling:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 1/2 pound ground beef, 1 small onion (finely chopped), 2 cloves garlic (minced), 1/2 teaspoon thyme, 1/2 teaspoon paprika, 1/2 teaspoon allspice, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 cup breadcrumbs, 1/2 cup beef broth or water, 1 green onion (chopped), 1 teaspoon soy sauce
Instructions
- Prepare the pastry: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and turmeric. Add butter and shortening, then blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water and mix until the dough comes together. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Make the filling: Heat oil in a skillet, cook onions until soft, then add garlic and beef. Cook until browned, then add thyme, paprika, allspice, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Stir in breadcrumbs, broth, green onions, and soy sauce. Simmer until thickened, then cool.
- Assembly and baking: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough, cut into circles. Spoon filling onto half of each circle, fold over, press to seal, crimp with a fork. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
- You can freeze the unbaked patties for later use.
- Chilling the assembled patties before baking yields a flakier crust.
