Description

Enjoy the flavors of Italy with this versatile Italian Compound Butter recipe. Packed with garlic, fresh herbs, Parmesan cheese, and a hint of lemon zest, this compound butter elevates any dish it accompanies. Spread it on warm bread, grilled meats, seafood, or vegetables for a burst of delicious Mediterranean taste.

Ingredients

Compound Butter:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh oregano, finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • zest of 1 lemon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Compound Butter: In a medium bowl, combine softened butter, garlic, basil, parsley, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, black pepper, Parmesan cheese, and lemon zest. Mix until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Shape and Refrigerate: Transfer the mixture onto a sheet of parchment paper or plastic wrap. Shape into a log and roll tightly, twisting the ends to seal. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until firm.
  3. Serve: Slice the compound butter into rounds as needed and serve over warm bread, grilled meats, seafood, or vegetables.

Notes

  • This butter can be frozen for up to 3 months—wrap tightly in plastic and store in a freezer bag.
  • If you don’t have fresh herbs, substitute 1 teaspoon each of dried basil, parsley, and oregano.
  • Great for melting over pasta, roasted potatoes, or steak.
