Description

This Authentic Irish Apple Cake recipe is a delightful dessert that captures the essence of traditional Irish baking. With layers of thinly sliced tart apples enveloped in a tender, spiced cake, this rustic treat is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3 medium tart apples (like Granny Smith), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease/flour an 8-inch round cake pan or springform pan.
  2. Prepare the Batter: In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients and cut in the cold butter until crumbly. Fold in the sliced apples. In a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients, then combine with the apple-flour mixture.
  3. Bake: Spread the batter in the pan and bake for 45–50 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Delicious served warm with powdered sugar, whipped cream, or warm custard.
  • Best enjoyed fresh but can be stored at room temperature for 2–3 days.
