Description

This Instant Pot Beef and Broccoli recipe delivers a quick, flavorful, and tender stir-fry with a savory sauce made from soy sauce, oyster sauce, garlic, ginger, and a touch of heat. Perfect for a weeknight dinner, it combines tender flank steak and crisp broccoli cooked under pressure to lock in flavor and texture in just 20 minutes of cooking time.

Ingredients

Sauce

  • ½ cup low-sodium beef broth (or water)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons Shaoxing wine (Chinese cooking wine)
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce (such as Sriracha)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes

Main Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into small florets
  • 1 pound flank steak, trimmed and thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: Combine all sauce ingredients in a jar with a lid and shake well to combine, or whisk together in a bowl until the sugar and cornstarch are fully dissolved.
  2. Marinate the beef: Pour ¼ cup of the prepared sauce over the sliced flank steak and toss until all pieces are coated evenly. Set aside to marinate briefly.
  3. Sauté broccoli: Set the Instant Pot to ‘Sauté’ mode and heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add broccoli florets and cook, stirring occasionally, until they turn bright green and are slightly tender but still crisp. Remove broccoli and set aside.
  4. Sauté beef: Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the Instant Pot. Add the marinated beef and cook until browned on the outside, stirring frequently. Then pour in the remaining prepared sauce.
  5. Pressure cook: Secure the Instant Pot lid and set it to ‘Manual’ or ‘Pressure Cook’ on high pressure for 10 minutes to tenderize the beef and blend flavors.
  6. Release pressure: Carefully perform a quick release to depressurize the Instant Pot once cooking is complete.
  7. Combine and serve: Add the cooked broccoli back into the pot, stir everything together to evenly distribute the sauce and ingredients, then garnish with sesame seeds. Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles as desired.

Notes

  • For best results, slice the flank steak thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness.
  • You can substitute Shaoxing wine with dry sherry or omit it if unavailable.
  • Adjust the amount of hot sauce or red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level.
  • Make sure to slice the broccoli into small florets for even cooking.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce and beef broth to control the saltiness of the dish.
