Description

This Hot Sausage Feta Honey Pizza combines the spicy kick of hot Italian sausage with the tangy creaminess of crumbled feta cheese and a drizzle of sweet honey. Perfectly baked on a crispy crust with melted mozzarella, this American-style pizza offers a delightful balance of flavors that will tantalize your taste buds in every bite.

Ingredients

Pizza Base

  • 1 pound pizza dough
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Toppings

  • 1/2 pound hot Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves or chopped fresh basil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Surface: Preheat your oven to 475°F and place a pizza stone or a baking sheet inside to heat thoroughly. This ensures a crisp crust when baking.
  2. Cook the Sausage: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the hot Italian sausage, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks. Continue cooking until the sausage is fully browned and cooked through. Set aside once done.
  3. Roll Out Pizza Dough: On a lightly floured surface, stretch or roll your pizza dough into a 12-inch round shape. Carefully transfer the dough onto a piece of parchment paper for easy handling.
  4. Add Sauce and Cheese: Evenly spread the pizza sauce over the dough leaving a small border around the edges. Then sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese uniformly over the sauce.
  5. Add Toppings: Distribute the cooked sausage evenly over the cheese. Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese on top. If you like a bit more heat, add the crushed red pepper flakes.
  6. Bake the Pizza: Using a pizza peel or the backside of a baking sheet, transfer the pizza along with the parchment paper to the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Finish with Honey and Herbs: Remove the pizza from the oven. Immediately drizzle honey over the hot pizza to add a sweet contrast. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves or chopped fresh basil if desired.
  8. Serve: Slice the pizza into portions and serve warm for the best flavor experience.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of honey to your taste preference to control the sweetness.
  • For an extra spicy kick, use a spicier sausage and increase the amount of red pepper flakes.
  • Using a pizza stone helps achieve a crispier crust but a baking sheet works as well.
  • Fresh herbs add a pop of color and a fresh aroma but can be omitted if unavailable.
