Description
This traditional Indian Roti/Wrap recipe features soft, pliable whole wheat flatbreads made from simple ingredients. Perfect as a healthy and versatile staple, these homemade rotis can be enjoyed with curries, used as wraps, or filled with grilled vegetables and meats. The dough is prepared with whole wheat flour and warm water, optionally enriched with oil or ghee for extra softness, then cooked quickly on a hot skillet for an authentic taste and texture.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (atta)
- 3/4 cup warm water (more if needed)
- 1 tablespoon oil or ghee (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
- Extra flour for rolling
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt if using. Gradually add warm water while mixing with your hand or a spoon until a soft, pliable dough forms. Add oil or ghee if desired to enhance softness.
- Knead the dough: Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 20–30 minutes to allow the gluten to relax.
- Divide and shape: Divide the rested dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a smooth ball to prepare for rolling out.
- Roll out the rotis: On a lightly floured surface, roll each dough ball into a thin circle approximately 6–8 inches in diameter, ensuring even thickness for proper puffing.
- Cook the rotis: Heat a dry skillet or tawa over medium-high heat. Place one rolled roti onto the hot skillet. Cook for about 30 seconds or until bubbles start to form on the surface.
- Flip and puff: Flip the roti and cook the second side for 30–45 seconds, pressing gently with a spatula to encourage puffing. Flip once more and cook the first side for another 15–20 seconds.
- Keep warm and repeat: Remove the cooked roti from the skillet and keep it warm in a covered container. Repeat the cooking process with the remaining dough balls.
Notes
- Use freshly ground whole wheat flour (atta) for the best texture.
- To make softer rotis, add 1–2 tablespoons of plain yogurt to the dough.
- Rotis can also be used as wraps for grilled vegetables, meats, or spreads.
