Description
This homemade toffee chunks recipe creates a deliciously crunchy butter toffee candy with an optional chocolate and nut topping, perfect for holiday treats or anytime you crave a sweet, buttery delight. Crafted using simple ingredients and stovetop cooking, it yields rich, golden toffee with a satisfying hard crack texture.
Ingredients
Toffee Base
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional Toppings
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (almonds or pecans)
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat and set it aside to prevent the toffee from sticking.
- Melt Butter: In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat, ensuring it is fully liquified and beginning to bubble gently.
- Add Sugar and Salt: Stir in the granulated sugar and salt continuously as you bring the mixture to a boil, preventing burning and ensuring even heating.
- Cook to Hard Crack Stage: Continue stirring and cooking the mixture, using a candy thermometer to monitor temperature until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage), which usually takes about 10–15 minutes.
- Remove from Heat and Add Vanilla: Take the saucepan off the heat and quickly stir in the vanilla extract to infuse the toffee with flavor.
- Pour and Spread Toffee: Carefully pour the hot toffee onto the prepared baking sheet and spread it out evenly into a thin layer for faster cooling and easier breaking.
- Add Chocolate (Optional): If using chocolate chips, sprinkle them evenly over the hot toffee. Let sit for 1–2 minutes to allow melting, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the surface.
- Top with Nuts (Optional): Sprinkle chopped nuts over the chocolate layer immediately if desired, pressing lightly to adhere.
- Cool and Set: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature until hardened, which may take several hours.
- Break into Chunks: Once set and firm, break the toffee into chunks of your preferred size and store them in an airtight container to maintain crispness.
Notes
- Use a candy thermometer to accurately reach the hard crack stage for perfect texture.
- Store the toffee in a cool, dry place to prevent it from softening or melting.
- Omit the chocolate and nuts if you prefer your toffee plain.
