Description

This Homemade Stromboli recipe features a delicious rolled Italian sandwich filled with layers of mozzarella, pepperoni or salami, ham, and seasoned with Parmesan and herbs. Perfectly baked to a golden crisp, it’s an easy and flavorful dish that can be served with marinara sauce for dipping, making it a crowd-pleaser ideal for family dinners or gatherings.

Ingredients

Dough and Sauce

  • 1 pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce (optional, for spreading inside or serving as a dip)

Fillings

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni or salami
  • 1/2 cup sliced ham
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Finish

  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking the stromboli.
  2. Roll Out Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle approximately 10 by 14 inches, providing ample space for the filling.
  3. Assemble Filling: Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce. Layer the sliced pepperoni or salami and ham on top, followed by the remaining mozzarella. Finally, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder evenly.
  4. Roll Dough: Carefully roll the dough from one long edge toward the other, tucking in the sides to keep the filling secure. Place the rolled stromboli seam-side down onto the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the beaten egg over the top of the stromboli to give it a beautiful golden and glossy finish when baked.
  6. Bake Stromboli: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until the crust turns golden brown and cooked through. Once baked, remove from the oven and allow it to rest for a few minutes to set.
  7. Serve: Slice the stromboli into portions and serve warm with marinara sauce on the side for dipping. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.

Notes

  • You can customize the fillings with your preferred deli meats or cheese varieties.
  • If you prefer a crispier crust, bake a few extra minutes but watch closely to avoid burning.
  • Marinara sauce inside the stromboli is optional; it can also be served solely as a dip.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit meats and add vegetables like spinach, mushrooms, and bell peppers.
  • Allowing the stromboli to rest after baking helps the filling set and makes slicing easier.
