Description

Homemade Magic Shell is a quick and simple topping that turns any bowl of ice cream into a fun treat. Made with just two primary ingredients—chocolate and coconut oil—this shell hardens instantly when poured over cold desserts, creating a delightful, crackable layer that’s reminiscent of childhood sundaes.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Chocolate Shell Ingredients

  • 1 cup (170g) semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil (refined or unrefined)

Optional Toppings

  • Sprinkles
  • Chopped nuts
  • Sea salt flakes

Instructions

  1. Melt the Chocolate and Coconut Oil: In a microwave-safe bowl or small saucepan, combine the chocolate and coconut oil. If using the microwave, heat in 20-second intervals, stirring after each, until smooth and fully melted. On the stovetop, use low heat and stir constantly until melted and blended.
  2. Cool Slightly: Allow the mixture to cool for 2–3 minutes. This ensures it’s not too hot when poured over ice cream, but still runny enough to pour easily.
  3. Pour Over Ice Cream: Drizzle or spoon the magic shell over your favorite ice cream. Wait a few seconds—watch the shell harden into a crackly layer.
  4. Add Toppings (Optional): If desired, immediately sprinkle toppings onto the wet shell before it hardens.
  5. Store Leftovers: Transfer any leftovers to a jar and keep at room temperature for up to two weeks. If it hardens, briefly microwave to liquefy again before using.

Notes

  • Use coconut oil for best results; other oils may not harden as well.
  • You can use milk, dark, or even white chocolate chips.
  • Store in a sealed jar at room temperature; avoid the fridge, as it will solidify.
  • Add a pinch of sea salt to enhance the chocolate flavor.
