Description

This Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp recipe features succulent large shrimp sautéed in a flavorful garlic butter sauce with a hint of lemon. Coated lightly with seasoned flour for a delicate crispness, this dish offers a perfect balance of zest and savoriness inspired by the Hawaiian islands. Ready in just 20 minutes, it’s an easy, vibrant main course ideal for weeknight dinners, served best with steamed rice and garnished with fresh parsley or green onions.

Ingredients

Shrimp and Coating

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined (tails on)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Sauce and Garnish

  • 10 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1/4 cup olive oil or neutral oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Chopped parsley or green onions for garnish
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the coating: In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper. Mix well to create the seasoned flour mixture.
  2. Coat the shrimp: Lightly dredge the shrimp in the flour mixture, ensuring an even coating. Shake off any excess flour to prevent clumping during cooking.
  3. Sauté the garlic: Heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Push the garlic to the edges of the pan to create space in the center.
  4. Cook the shrimp: Place the shrimp in a single layer in the center of the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until the shrimp turn pink and develop slightly crisp edges.
  5. Finish with butter and lemon: Add the remaining tablespoon of butter and the lemon juice to the skillet. Toss the shrimp gently to coat them evenly in the buttery lemon sauce.
  6. Garnish and serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Sprinkle chopped parsley or green onions over the shrimp. Serve immediately with steamed rice and lemon wedges on the side for added brightness.

Notes

  • For an authentic Hawaiian experience, serve the shrimp with a scoop of white rice and a side of classic macaroni salad.
  • Substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour to make the dish gluten-free.
  • Be careful not to burn the garlic during sautĂ©ing to avoid a bitter taste.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper amount or omit it to tailor the spice level to your preferences.
