Description

Celebrate Halloween with this fun and festive Lipton Spinach Dip served in a spooky coffin-shaped bread bowl. This creamy spinach dip features frozen spinach, vegetable soup mix, sour cream, mayonnaise, and crunchy water chestnuts for texture, all chilled to perfection. Served in a hollowed unsliced bread loaf shaped like a coffin, it makes a perfect centerpiece for any Halloween party. Pair with your favorite chips, pretzels, or bread cubes for a tasty and eerie appetizer.

Ingredients

Spinach Dip

  • 1 (10 oz) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
  • 1 packet vegetable soup mix (Lipton or Knorr)
  • 1 cup sour cream (light version optional)
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (light version optional)
  • ½ cup chopped onion or substitute with chopped celery
  • 1 (8 oz) can water chestnuts, drained and chopped

Bread Bowl

  • 1 loaf unsliced firm rectangular bread loaf (for coffin shape)

Dippers and Decoration

  • Blue corn tortilla chips, pretzels, crackers, or bread cubes for dipping
  • Mini skeleton for decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Spinach: Thaw and thoroughly squeeze out excess water from the frozen chopped spinach to prevent a watery dip.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the drained spinach with the vegetable soup mix, sour cream, mayonnaise, chopped onion or celery, and chopped water chestnuts. Mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly.
  3. Refrigerate Dip: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the mixture for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the dip to chill.
  4. Hollow Bread Bottom: Using a sharp knife, cut about 2 inches deep into the bottom part of the bread loaf, leaving a ¾ inch border all around the edges. Scoop out the bread carefully and save the removed bread pieces for dipping later.
  5. Hollow Bread Lid: Similarly, hollow out the inside of the bread “lid” to about ½ to ¾ inch depth to create enough space for the dip.
  6. Add Casket Handle (Optional): Attach a breadstick to the front of the coffin-shaped loaf using toothpicks to resemble a casket handle for a spooky effect.
  7. Fill Bread Bowl: Spoon the chilled spinach dip into the hollowed bottom of the bread coffin, ensuring the well is filled completely for an appealing presentation.
  8. Decorate Coffin: Place a mini skeleton inside or on top of the dip-filled bread coffin for a Halloween-themed decoration, if desired.
  9. Arrange and Serve: Place the prepared coffin bread bowl on a large serving platter and surround it with your choice of dippers such as blue corn tortilla chips, pretzels, crackers, or bread cubes to enjoy with the dip.

Notes

  • Be sure to thoroughly squeeze the spinach dry to prevent a watery dip.
  • The vegetable soup mix adds savory depth; do not skip it.
  • Light sour cream and mayonnaise can be used for a lower fat version.
  • Save the bread pieces scooped out from the loaf for extra dipping.
  • The breadstick ‘handle’ is optional but adds a fun Halloween touch.
  • For best flavor, chill the dip at least 2 hours or overnight.
