Ingredients
Brownie Batter
- 1 cup granulated white sugar
- ½ cup all-purpose white flour
- ½ cup Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- 2 large eggs
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Cream Cheese Swirl
- 8 oz cream cheese, at room temperature
- ¼ cup granulated white sugar
- 1 large egg
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- A few drops orange food coloring
Instructions
- Prep the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8 x 8 inch baking dish with parchment paper or foil and spray it lightly with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine 1 cup sugar, ½ cup flour, ½ cup cocoa powder, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon baking powder. Stir until fully blended to create an even chocolate base.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, ⅓ cup vegetable oil, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth, well blended, and slightly frothy.
- Incorporate Wet into Dry: Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with dry ingredients and gently fold together with a spatula just until combined. Be careful not to overmix to maintain the brownies’ tenderness.
- Reserve Batter: Scoop out ¼ cup of the brownie batter into a small separate bowl; set this aside for swirling later. Pour the remaining batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
- Prepare Cream Cheese Mixture: In a medium bowl, beat together 8 oz room-temperature cream cheese, ¼ cup sugar, 1 egg, and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
- Add Color: Drop a few drops of orange food coloring into the cream cheese mixture and stir gently until the color is vibrant and uniform.
- Layer Cream Cheese: Carefully spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the brownie batter in the pan.
- Create Swirl: Drop tablespoons of the reserved brownie batter on top of the cream cheese layer at intervals. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the two layers together, creating a marbled effect.
- Bake: Bake the brownies in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with moist crumbs but no wet batter.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the pan from the oven and let the brownies cool completely in the pan before slicing into 16 pieces to serve.
Notes
- To get clean slices, chill the brownies in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before cutting.
- Use room temperature cream cheese to ensure a smooth swirl mixture without lumps.
- Adjust orange food coloring to your desired swirl intensity.
- Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
