This quick and easy recipe delivers a warm, satisfying meal in just 10 minutes, perfect for breakfast or a light meal any time of the day.
Ingredients
Rice
- 2 cups cooked white rice (preferably short-grain or medium-grain rice)
Eggs
- 2 large eggs
Seasonings & Garnishes
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or to taste)
- 1 teaspoon butter (optional, for added richness)
- 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
- 1 green onion, finely chopped
- Nori (seaweed) strips, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Rice: Divide the cooked white rice equally into two serving bowls. Keep the rice warm while preparing the eggs to ensure the dish is served hot.
- Fry the Eggs: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the sesame oil. Crack the eggs carefully into the skillet. Fry the eggs until the whites are completely set and the yolks reach your preferred doneness. Sunny-side up is traditional for this dish, offering a rich, runny yolk.
- Assemble the Dish: Place one fried egg on top of the rice in each bowl, centering the egg for an appealing presentation.
- Add Seasoning: Drizzle soy sauce over both the egg and rice to taste. If using, add a small pat of butter atop the egg to melt over the warm rice, adding extra richness and flavor.
- Garnish: Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds and finely chopped green onions over each bowl. Add nori strips if desired for added texture and a subtle seaweed flavor.
- Serve: To eat, mix the egg, soy sauce, and rice thoroughly to combine all flavors and textures into a delicious, cohesive dish.
Notes
- Use freshly cooked warm rice for the best texture and flavor.
- The butter is optional but adds a wonderful richness to the dish.
- Soy sauce can be adjusted to personal taste or replaced with tamari for gluten-free options.
- For a healthier version, use low-sodium soy sauce and minimize butter usage.
- Sunnyside up eggs with runny yolks are traditional, but you can cook eggs to your liking.
- Nori strips add a lovely umami touch but can be omitted if unavailable.
