Ingredients
Beef Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 8 ounces sliced mushrooms (white or cremini)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 ½ cups beef broth
- ½ cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons cream cheese (optional for extra creaminess)
To Serve
- 3 cups cooked white rice
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional for garnish)
Instructions
- Brown the Beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed to reduce greasiness.
- Sauté Onion, Garlic, and Mushrooms: Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and sliced mushrooms, cooking for another 5 to 6 minutes until mushrooms are tender and most liquid has evaporated.
- Add Spices and Flour: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour, paprika, salt, and black pepper over the beef mixture. Stir well to coat and cook for about 1 minute to remove raw flour taste.
- Add Worcestershire Sauce and Broth: Pour in the Worcestershire sauce and slowly add the beef broth while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 5 to 7 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Incorporate Creams: Lower the heat to low, then stir in the sour cream and cream cheese (if using) until the sauce is smooth and creamy. Simmer gently for 2 more minutes to meld flavors.
- Serve: Spoon the rich stroganoff over warm cooked white rice. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired for a burst of freshness and color.
Notes
- This recipe can be made lighter by substituting ground beef with ground turkey or chicken.
- For added nutrition and texture, you can stir in frozen peas or spinach at the end of cooking.
- Leftovers store well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, allow it to simmer a few minutes longer before adding the sour cream.
- Serve with a side salad or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal.
