Description

Golden, gooey, and bursting with melty cheese, this Grilled Mozzarella Sandwich is a comforting classic that’s endlessly customizable. With crisp buttery bread and stretchy mozzarella, it’s the ultimate in grilled cheese satisfaction.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough, Italian, or thick-cut white)
  • 4 oz fresh mozzarella, sliced or torn
  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: fresh basil leaves, tomato slices, or chili flakes

Instructions

  1. Butter or brush the outer sides of each slice of bread with butter or olive oil.
  2. Layer mozzarella slices evenly on two of the bread slices. Sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper, and add optional extras like basil or tomato if desired.
  3. Top with remaining bread slices to form sandwiches, buttered side out.
  4. Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-low. Add sandwiches, cover lightly, and cook for 3–4 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese is fully melted.
  5. Transfer to a cutting board, let cool slightly, then slice and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Try combining mozzarella with provolone or cheddar for extra flavor and stretch.
  • Use ciabatta or rustic Italian bread for extra crispiness and structure.
  • For a gluten-free option, substitute with gluten-free bread and follow the same method.
