Ingredients
For the Beef Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Pita and Veggies
- 4 pita breads
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup sliced cucumber
- 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
For the Lemon Garlic Yogurt Sauce
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, finely grated
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Sauté Onions: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and sauté the onion until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add Garlic and Cook: Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant, stirring constantly to prevent burning.
- Brown the Beef: Stir in the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook until fully browned and no longer pink, about 7 to 8 minutes.
- Season the Meat: Add the dried oregano, ground cumin, smoked paprika, ground cinnamon, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes to allow the spices to blend and become aromatic. Remove skillet from heat.
- Prepare the Yogurt Sauce: In a small bowl, combine plain Greek yogurt, fresh lemon juice, lemon zest, olive oil, grated garlic, and a pinch of salt. Mix until smooth and creamy.
- Warm and Prepare Pitas: Slightly warm the pita breads in a dry skillet or microwave. Slice each pita open gently to create pockets for stuffing.
- Assemble Stuffed Pitas: Fill each pita pocket evenly with the seasoned beef mixture, followed by shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced cucumber, and crumbled feta cheese.
- Add Yogurt Sauce and Serve: Drizzle each stuffed pita generously with the lemon garlic yogurt sauce and serve immediately for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For a more traditional Greek flavor, substitute ground lamb for the beef.
- Add sliced olives for an extra briny note.
- Fresh herbs such as parsley or dill can be incorporated for added freshness and aroma.
- Warm the pita slightly before stuffing to prevent tearing and enhance softness.
