Description

Golden Sourdough Cheesy Breadsticks are a delicious and easy appetizer that transform sourdough discard into a cheesy, savory treat. These breadsticks feature a soft, flavorful dough topped with a blend of mozzarella, sharp cheddar, and Parmesan cheeses, seasoned with garlic powder and Italian herbs. Perfect for snacking, parties, or alongside your favorite meal.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 cup sourdough starter (unfed or discard)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Topping

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (optional)

Other

  • Cornmeal or parchment for baking sheet

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly dust it with cornmeal to prevent sticking and add a bit of texture.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients and Starter: In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, all-purpose flour, baking powder, garlic powder, and salt. Stir until a soft, cohesive dough forms.
  3. Add Butter and Knead: Add the melted butter to the dough mixture and stir to incorporate fully. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently a few times until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Shape the Dough: Roll the dough out into a 9×12-inch rectangle. Then transfer this rectangle onto your prepared baking sheet.
  5. Add Cheese and Herbs: Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella, sharp cheddar, Parmesan cheese, and dried Italian herbs (if using) over the surface of the dough.
  6. Bake the Breadsticks: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the breadsticks are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the breadsticks cool slightly. Slice into 12 breadsticks and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • This recipe is a great way to use up sourdough discard, reducing waste in the kitchen.
  • For crispier breadsticks, you can bake them a few minutes longer, watching carefully to avoid burning.
  • Try experimenting with different cheese combinations or sprinkle in some red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
