Ingredients
Dough
- 1 cup sourdough starter (unfed or discard)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Topping
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (optional)
Other
- Cornmeal or parchment for baking sheet
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly dust it with cornmeal to prevent sticking and add a bit of texture.
- Mix Dry Ingredients and Starter: In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, all-purpose flour, baking powder, garlic powder, and salt. Stir until a soft, cohesive dough forms.
- Add Butter and Knead: Add the melted butter to the dough mixture and stir to incorporate fully. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently a few times until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Shape the Dough: Roll the dough out into a 9×12-inch rectangle. Then transfer this rectangle onto your prepared baking sheet.
- Add Cheese and Herbs: Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella, sharp cheddar, Parmesan cheese, and dried Italian herbs (if using) over the surface of the dough.
- Bake the Breadsticks: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the breadsticks are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the breadsticks cool slightly. Slice into 12 breadsticks and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
