Description

Golden Jalapeno Poppers are a delicious appetizer featuring jalapenos stuffed with a creamy mix of cream cheese, garlic powder, cheddar cheese, and fresh chives, coated in a crunchy panko breadcrumb mixture with a hint of smoked paprika, then baked to golden perfection. This recipe yields a perfect balance of spicy, creamy, and crispy textures, ideal for parties or a tasty snack.

Ingredients

Jalapenos

  • 12 jalapenos (halved lengthwise and seeded)

Filling

  • 8 oz cream cheese (Philadelphia for creamier texture)
  • 1.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 5 oz cheddar cheese (Tillamook, freshly grated)
  • 3 tbsp chives, finely chopped

Coating

  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs (Kikkoman preferred for crunch)
  • 1.5 tbsp butter (melted and cooled slightly)
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Jalapenos: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Wash the jalapenos, cut them lengthwise in half, and carefully remove all seeds and membranes using a spoon, being cautious to avoid touching your face or eyes.
  2. Make the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, garlic powder, freshly grated cheddar cheese, and chopped chives until thoroughly mixed and creamy.
  3. Stuff the Jalapenos: Spoon the cheese mixture into each jalapeno half, filling them generously but evenly.
  4. Prepare the Coating: In a separate bowl, mix the panko breadcrumbs, smoked paprika, and melted butter until the crumbs are evenly coated.
  5. Coat the Poppers: Carefully press the panko mixture onto the filled side of each jalapeno half to form a crunchy crust.
  6. Bake: Arrange the jalapeno poppers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a lightly greased rack. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the panko is golden brown and the cheese filling is bubbly.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm as a flavorful appetizer or snack.

Notes

  • Wear gloves when handling jalapenos to avoid skin irritation.
  • For less heat, remove all membranes and seeds thoroughly.
  • Freshly shred the cheddar cheese for better melting and texture.
  • You can substitute chives with green onions or parsley if preferred.
  • Serve with a cooling dip like ranch or sour cream to balance the spice.
