Ingredients
Brownie Batter
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup fresh blueberries, rinsed and dried
- ½ cup chocolate chips (optional)
Vanilla Glaze
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 4-6 tablespoons milk or fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan to prevent the brownies from sticking.
- Melt the Butter: In a large bowl, melt the butter either in the microwave in 30-second intervals or over low heat in a saucepan.
- Add Sugars: Stir in both the granulated sugar and light brown sugar until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Incorporate Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time to ensure even mixing, then stir in the tablespoon of vanilla extract.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder to evenly distribute the leavening and chocolate.
- Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing gently until just combined to avoid overmixing which can toughen the brownies.
- Fold in Blueberries and Chocolate Chips (Optional): Carefully fold in the rinsed and dried fresh blueberries and optional chocolate chips to preserve the berries’ integrity.
- Pour Batter into Pan: Pour the brownie batter into the prepared 9×13 inch pan, spreading it evenly to ensure uniform baking.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, testing doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out with moist crumbs but no wet batter.
- Cool: Remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool completely in the pan to allow them to set and firm up before glazing.
- Combine Glaze Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk or lemon juice, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding additional milk or lemon juice one tablespoon at a time as needed.
- Glaze the Brownies: Once completely cool, pour the glaze evenly over the brownies and spread with a spatula for full coverage.
- Set the Glaze: Allow the glaze to set for about 15 minutes at room temperature before cutting into squares and serving to ensure clean slices and a perfect finish.
Notes
- For a tangier glaze, use lemon juice instead of milk.
- Fresh blueberries work best; avoid frozen as they can add extra moisture.
- Chocolate chips are optional but add extra richness.
- Be careful not to overmix the batter to keep brownies tender and moist.
- Allow brownies to cool completely before glazing to prevent the glaze from melting.
